A Beautiful Setting in a RUSTIC surrounding
"Ruuk Village was initiated and sponsored by two Sri Lankans, Thileeban & Roshan. The first phase was completed in July 2013 in the beautiful fishing village of Kalpitiya, on the banks of the main kite-surfing lagoon. The team is all local mostly from Kalpitya, except for Daniel who joined the movement in 2014. Our mission is to provide all water sport lovers and nature enthusiasts a place to feel welcomed, with a minimum footprint on our surroundings. For example, since 2016 Ruuk Village has banned the use of plastic water bottles and plastic straws, which you can read about more in the , concept of Ruuk Village.
Kalpitiya boasts unspoilt beaches and over seven lagoons, with kitesurfing being the most popular activity. There are plenty of other things to do, however! . More infos here.
"Ruuk Village" is situated right by the Kalpitiya main lagoon where you have perfect wind conditions for beginners and advanced kiters alike. From May until the end of September the trade winds and shallow teaching zone give students from all over the world the opportunity to learn to kite surf in Kalpitiya, a location that enables quicker learning than most other kitesurfing locations.
Kitesurfing in Kalpitiya is quickly becoming a famous sport for travelers from all over the world. Since Kalpitiya is an area which is stretched over 44km of land (peninsula), you won’t find mass tourism like other well known kite destinations. And we are content about this.
From November till April dolphin and whale watching season starts. starts. During this time, you are still able to kitesurf in the Kalpitiya main lagoon. During this season you could be lucky to kite surf among dolphins. Our kite school & rental is operational whole year around.

The real owners of Ruuk Village are not the initiators (Thileeban & Roshan) but the team who live and work within the village. One of the aims of the project is to offer our local team members job security throughout the year, which is one of the reasons we keep our doors open both in and out of the kite season. The main aim of the project is to empower young locals by offering a foot into the growing tourism industry. Ruuk Village will stay small to guarantee quality service and sustainable practices. We believe in quality instead of quantity.
Ruuk Village wants to be a part of putting Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka on to the map of most friendly places on earth. We are determined to keep Kalpitiya the way it is, rather than becoming another party Mecca.
All of our team members are from the surrounding area except our Kite-school crew ( VDWS / IKO certified instructors ).
When most of the others are expanding and increasing the number of beds year after year, Ruuk Village has been able to keep to our initial concept of being sustainable. An organic healthy growth is what Ruuk Village is after.
We have a load of ongoing social projects where we support and DEVELOP our immediate surrounding. IN case you wish to be a part of this effort, do drop us a mail.
