"Ruuk Village's first phase" was built and completed in July 2013 by the side of a small fishing village in the north western part of Sri Lanka – on the banks of the main kite-surfing lagoon in Kalpitiya. Ruuk Village's mission is to provide all water sport lovers and nature enthusiasts a place to feel at home with a minimum footprint on our surroundings. Since 2016 Ruuk Village has banned the use of plastic water bottles and plastic straws.

There are few things which you can do in Kalpitiya and one of the most important being kitesurfing in Kalpitiya. More infos here.

"Ruuk Village" is directly situated at the Kalpitiya main lagoon where you have perfect wind conditions for beginners and advanced kiters alike. From May until end of September the trade winds allows Ruuk Village to host Kiters among other travelers. Students from all over the world can learn to kite surf in Kalpitiya in our lagoon where you can make quick progress. In the shallow teaching zone, the speed of learning kitesurfing in Kalpitiya is much better compared to other places in the world.

Kitesurfing in Kalpitiya is fast becoming a famous sport for travelers from all over the world. But if you are looking for a beach life like in Thailand or Vietnam, avoid coming to Kalpitiya.

From November till April dolphin and whale watching season starts. This is due to the fact that the winds die out and the ocean becomes flat. This allows our boatmen to easily spot the dolphins in hundreds. If you are lucky, even blue whales too. With larger kites, you are still able to kite-surf Kalpitiya main lagoon and even the Indian Ocean. If you are lucky, you will have the chance to kite surf among dolphins too. During December to March students can also learn to kite surf in Kalpitiya. Our Kite-school is operational from May to September and then December till March

The working concept is to give our local team members the feeling that it is not only a home for our guests, but also a home for themselves - for team members who have worked, supported and contributed to build this village from scratch. One of the main aims of the project is to give youth of the surrounding area a chance to be groomed in to tourism industry. It is important to have minimum impact to their social and family lives. Ruuk Village will stay small to guarantee a better service quality and to be sustainable.

Ruuk Village wants to be a part of putting Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka on to the map of most friendly places on earth.  Determined to keep Kalpitiya the way it is, Kalpitiya shall not become another party Mecca.

All our team members are from the surrounding area except our Kite-school crew ( VDWS / IKO certified instructors ).

When most of the others are expanding and increasing the number of beds year after year, Ruuk Village has been able to keep to their initial concept of being sustainable. An organic healthy growth is what Ruuk Village is after.
